Graphic design students create new logos for Highlands Writers Conference – Six Mile Post

Students in the Digital Art and Design Foundations class have been tasked with creating a new design for the annual Highlands Writers Conference.

Per the school’s website, the conference “connects acclaimed authors with a local writing community.”

The original logo for the conference was designed this past February and displays an all-blue silhouette of mountains with arrows at its sides, positioned over the conference’s name. Humanities Instructor, Valentina Caver, gave her students the opportunity to create a new one.

This project is the last of the semester for the students, as well as their first project based around the needs of a client. The students met with those involved in the conference for their assignment.

“I learned a lot about how to take what the client would need for their logo, take their input and ideas and implement them into a design,” Cartersville student, Jenna Patterson, said.

The students each had their own unique spin on how their logo was designed and what it stood for.

“They wanted it to show togetherness and hope, basically that it (the conference) was for writers of all ages and different cultures,” Cartersville student, Evan Nettles, said.

Nettles’ design included an orange and blue writing quill over the conference title. Patterson drew inspiration from nature in hers, incorporating the outline of the Blue Ridge Mountains with various shades of blue and GHC orange.

“My inspiration for my logo actually changed a couple of times, but the final inspiration I went with was a wax logo,” Cartersville student Matthew Perry said, “I thought it would better communicate what the conference was.”

At the time of this article being written, a winner has yet to be selected for the new logo’s design. Students interested in the writer’s conference can find more information on the conference webpage.
